They are breaking from their usual programming to give participants a bunch of quick little workshops on topics ranging from Mobile Security, Get to Know Your Terms of Service, Phishing, Passwords, Threat Modeling and more! If you're someone interested in getting into the basics of cybersecurity, this is the perfect event for you!
Come on by to meet n' greet with other folks and get some help with your tech needs! Snacks and children are welcome. Open to beginner and seasoned techies alike!
This event is one of many being offered as part of Library Privacy Week. Library Privacy Week is brought to you by NYC Digital Safety: Privacy & Security, a new initiative to bring resources covering digital privacy and data security to the City’s frontline public library staff. With support from the City of New York Mayor’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer, the project will ensure that NYC residents can rely on public libraries for their questions about internet privacy and security.
2/3 to Grand Army Plaza or Eastern Parkway/Brooklyn Museum, or B41 bus. The Info Commons lab and other parts of the library (including bathrooms) are wheelchair accessible.
Privacy is the space in which ideas are developed, to retreat into whenever you want. This space is not only physical but digital as well. Governments and companies don't want to respect that so we become active ourselves.
CryptoParties are free and open for everyone, but especially those without prior knowledge, who haven't yet attended one.
CryptoParty is a decentralized movement with events happening all over the world. The goal is to pass on knowledge about protecting yourself in the digital space. This can include encrypted communication, preventing being tracked while browsing the web and general security advice for computers and smartphones.
To try the programs and apps at the CryptoParty bring your laptop or smartphone.
The CyPurr Collective (formerly CryptoSquad NYC) is a group of some tech-minded folks who are very jazzed about cybersecurity, cats, and helping folks out with their digital dilemmas. We offer workshops for activists, journalists, educators, and everyday folks who want to up their encryption game! Additionally, we offer personal security audits for groups/organizations who are concerned about their cyber-safety. Plus, we have some of the kewlest CryptoParties!
